AL-KO (Alois Kober) is a German manufacturer of caravan and trailer chassis, hitching systems, stabilisers, wheel locks, and the ATC (Automatic Trailer Control) electronic anti-sway system.

The AL-KO chassis underpins the majority of European caravans. The AL-KO ATC system detects snaking and applies the trailer's brakes automatically. AL-KO also produces the DWS (Driving Safety Systems) weight distribution hitches and the Secure wheel lock.

Absorption Fridge

Vehicle Types

3-way fridge, three-way refrigerator, gas fridge, LPG fridge, Dometic absorption, Waeco fridge

An absorption fridge is a silent refrigerator that uses heat (from LPG gas, 230V mains, or 12V DC) to drive a cooling cycle with no moving parts. The three-power capability makes it standard in European motorhomes.

Absorption fridges must be kept reasonably level (within ±6°) to function correctly — hence the need for levelling ramps. They cool slowly and are less efficient than compressor fridges but can run indefinitely on LPG gas when off-grid.

Accumulator Tank

Water System

Pressure vessel, expansion vessel, accumulator, pump accumulator, anti-pulsation tank

An accumulator tank is a small pressure vessel connected to the water pump circuit that stores pressurised water, smoothing flow, reducing pump cycling, and extending pump life.

Without an accumulator, the pump starts every time a tap is opened (even for a tiny flow). With one, the pump runs only when the pressure drops below a set threshold, reducing noise and wear. Typically 0.5–2 litres in size.

Aire

Sites & Services

Aire de camping-car, motorhome aire, motorhome stop, France aire, aire municipale

An aire is a designated motorhome parking area in France and other countries offering free or low-cost overnight parking with basic facilities such as fresh water, waste disposal, and sometimes electricity.

A Battery Management System (BMS) is an electronic circuit that protects lithium battery cells from overcharging, over-discharging, overcurrent, and overheating, and balances cell voltages to maximise battery life.

Every lithium (LiFePO4) leisure battery includes a BMS, either built-in or external. The BMS disconnects the battery if any cell goes out of safe range. A good BMS also provides state-of-charge data via Bluetooth or CAN bus.

Berth

Layout & Interior

Sleeping berth, bunk, fixed bed, convertible berth, pull-down bed, drop-down bed

A berth is a designated sleeping space in a motorhome or caravan. Berths may be fixed (always set up as a bed) or convertible (a dinette or lounge that folds into a sleeping area). The number of berths is a key motorhome specification.

A "4-berth" motorhome sleeps four people. Fixed berths are more convenient; convertible berths save space during the day. Many motorhomes combine a fixed rear double bed with convertible front berths for the best of both.

Black Water

Water System

Sewage, black tank, toilet waste, holding tank, effluent, sanitation waste

Black water is waste water from the motorhome or RV toilet, containing human waste. In North American RVs this is collected in a black water tank; in European motorhomes toilet waste typically goes into a cassette.

Black water must be disposed of only at authorised dump stations or service points. Never discharge into drains, rivers, or on the ground. In the USA, BLM land and most campgrounds have designated dump stations.

Boondocking

Lifestyle

Dry camping, off-grid camping, dispersed camping, BLM camping, no-hookup camping

Boondocking is an American term for camping in an RV or van without any hookups (electricity, water, or sewer), typically on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or U.S. Forest Service.

The term is used primarily in North America. In Europe, the equivalent practice is called "wild camping" or "free camping." Boondockers rely on solar panels, water tanks, and composting toilets for self-sufficiency.

C

Caravan mover, motorhome mover, remote mover, electric mover, Truma Mover, Reich Mover, Powrtouch

A mover is a battery-powered motorised roller system fitted to caravan or motorhome wheels that allows the vehicle to be manoeuvred precisely on site using a remote control, without needing the engine or a second person.

Movers are most useful for tight pitches, reversing onto narrow strips, or positioning in low-ceilinged storage facilities. Popular brands include Truma, Reich, and Powrtouch. They draw significant 12V current during use and need a well-charged leisure battery.

N

Noseweight

Towing

Nose weight, tongue weight, vertical ball load, hitch load, drawbar load

Noseweight is the downward force exerted by a caravan or trailer's coupling on the tow ball of the towing vehicle, measured in kilograms. Correct noseweight is essential for safe, stable towing.

The recommended noseweight is 5–7% of the trailer's laden weight, within the limits in both the tow vehicle and caravan handbooks. Too little causes snaking; too much causes steering and braking problems.

O

Off-grid

Lifestyle

Off grid, grid-free, self-sufficient camping, autonomous power, solar camping, no hookups

Off-grid describes an RV or campervan operating entirely without an external electrical hookup, mains water or sewage connection — relying solely on onboard resources: solar panels, batteries, water tanks and a composting or cassette toilet.

A typical off-grid setup includes 200–600 W of solar panels, 100–400 Ah of LiFePO4 battery capacity, a 1–3 kW inverter and 100–200 litres of fresh water. A well-designed system allows weeks of comfortable camping outside established sites.

Overcab Motorhome

Vehicle Types

Low-profile motorhome, cab-over bed, Alkoven, alcove motorhome, Class C cab-over, overhead bunk

An overcab motorhome is a coachbuilt body fitted to a van chassis that includes a sleeping area above the cab. In Europe it is called "low-profile"; in North America the overcab bed projects forward to form Class C.

Overcab motorhomes maximise sleeping capacity by using the space above the cab. They are slightly taller than semi-integrated models but still fit in most campsites.

Overlanding

Lifestyle

Overland travel, overlander, overland adventure, expedition travel, off-road camping

Overlanding is a style of self-reliant, long-distance vehicle-based travel across remote terrain — typically by 4×4 or expedition vehicles — where the journey itself is the primary goal rather than a specific destination.

Overlanders prioritise vehicle preparation: lifted suspension, winches, snorkels, extended fuel capacity (300+ litres) and expedition-grade rooftop tents. Popular routes include trans-African tracks, the Silk Road through Central Asia and the Pan-American Highway.

P

Payload

Weight & Dimensions

Carrying capacity, user payload, weight allowance, load capacity

Payload is the maximum weight of passengers, personal belongings, food, water, and accessories that can be loaded into a motorhome or caravan, calculated as MTPLM minus MIRO.

Payload is often surprisingly low — some motorhomes have only 50–150 kg despite a 3,500 kg MTPLM. Water weighs 1 kg per litre; a full 100L tank adds 100 kg. Always weigh the loaded vehicle before travelling.

Pop-Up Camper

Vehicle Types

Folding camper, fold-out caravan, tent trailer, collapsible trailer, concertina camper

A pop-up camper is a lightweight towable trailer with collapsible roof and sides that fold up at the campsite to create sleeping and living space, reducing towing height and wind resistance on the road.

Pop-up campers are the lightest and most affordable towable option. When folded, they typically stand around 1 metre high, making them easy to tow with smaller cars. Popular brands include Combi-Camp and Raclet.

R

RCD – Residual Current Device

Electrical

Earth leakage breaker, RCCB, GFCI, trip switch, circuit breaker, RCD plug, safety trip

An RCD is a safety device that automatically disconnects the electrical supply if it detects current leaking to earth (indicating a fault or electric shock hazard), required on all campsite hook-up supplies.

RCDs are mandatory for campsite hook-up connections in most European countries. They trip within 30 milliseconds of detecting a 30mA fault. Many motorhome mains systems include a built-in RCD in the hook-up socket.

RV (Recreational Vehicle)

Vehicle Types

Recreation vehicle, rig, camper, coach, motorcoach

RV is a broad North American term for any motorized or towable vehicle designed for recreational travel and temporary living, including motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and pop-up campers.

In Europe, the equivalent terms are "motorhome" (for self-propelled units) and "caravan" (for towable trailers). The global RV market is valued at over $50 billion annually.

Semi-Integrated Motorhome

Vehicle Types

Semi-integrated, partial-integrated, C-class Europe, Teilintegriert, Fiat Ducato motorhome

A semi-integrated motorhome is built on a van chassis (typically Fiat Ducato or Mercedes Sprinter) in which the driver's cab is retained with its original dashboard, but a separate coachbuilt body is fitted behind it.

Semi-integrated models are lighter and more affordable than fully integrated motorhomes. They are the most popular motorhome type in Europe, offering a good balance of comfort and drivability.

Shore Power

Electrical

Mains electricity, 230V hook-up, landline power, campsite mains, EHU, CEE hook-up

Shore power is mains electricity (230V AC in Europe, 120V in North America) supplied to a motorhome or caravan via a cable connection to a campsite power post, allowing 230V appliances and battery charging.

"Shore power" terminology is borrowed from marine usage. The standard European campsite socket is a 16A CEE 17 (blue commando) plug. Hook-up points typically provide 6A, 10A, or 16A depending on the campsite.

Slide-Out

Layout & Interior

Slideout, room extension, pop-out, slide room, room slide

A slide-out is a section of a motorhome's wall and floor that slides outward hydraulically or electrically when parked, extending the interior living space by 20–40 cm on one or more sides.

Slide-outs significantly increase interior width when parked but must be fully retracted before driving. Multiple slide-outs are possible on large Class A motorhomes. They require regular maintenance of seals and slide mechanisms.

Solar Panel

Electrical

PV panel, solar array, roof solar, photovoltaic panel, solar charging, mono solar, poly solar

A solar panel is a photovoltaic panel fitted to a motorhome or caravan roof that converts sunlight into 12–24V DC electricity to charge leisure batteries and power 12V appliances directly.

A 200W panel in summer sun produces approximately 80–100Ah per day. Most systems include an MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) solar charge controller for maximum efficiency. Panels are rated at 25°C under STC conditions.
