Fire permit, campfire permit Canada, backcountry fire permit, BC Parks fire permit, Alberta fire permit, Ontario fire permit
A fire permit is the formal authorisation to light a fire in Canadian provincial and national parks, on Crown land, or in any area under fire-control regulations. Often included in the campsite fee in frontcountry sites; required separately for backcountry, random camping, or any open fire outside designated rings.
Issued by provincial agencies (BC Wildfire Service, Alberta Forestry, Ontario MNRF) and Parks Canada. Cost varies by province and season; check with the issuing agency. Suspended during fire bans — check current status before lighting. Penalties for starting a wildfire can exceed CAD 1 million plus suppression cost. Always carry a shovel, an axe, and water when on a permit.
