Fixed bed

Layout & Interior

Fixed bed, permanent bed, made-up bed, non-convertible bed, rear fixed bed, transverse bed

A fixed bed is a permanent sleeping place that does not have to be made up each evening and packed away each morning — the opposite of a dinette that converts.

The fixed bed is the great dividing line in motorhome layouts: it saves 10–15 minutes twice a day and keeps the bedding made, but costs 1.5–2 m of body length and usually sits raised above a garage. The common forms are French, island, transverse and bunk; low-profiles put it at the rear, while the overcab bunk of an alcove counts as fixed too. When choosing, check headroom above the mattress and whether one partner has to climb over the other.
