A Battery Management System (BMS) is an electronic circuit that protects lithium battery cells from overcharging, over-discharging, overcurrent, and overheating, and balances cell voltages to maximise battery life.

Every lithium (LiFePO4) leisure battery includes a BMS, either built-in or external. The BMS disconnects the battery if any cell goes out of safe range. A good BMS also provides state-of-charge data via Bluetooth or CAN bus.
