Barrio de viajeros, traveller neighbourhood Uruguay, Uruguay rodantero community, casa rodante settlement Uruguay, Uruguay nomad village
A barrio de viajeros is a Uruguayan format of temporary casa rodante and motorhome community that gathers in coastal towns (Cabo Polonio, Punta del Diablo, Valizas) or rural areas for weeks or months. It blends communal living with slow-travel tourism.
Roots in the international traveller and digital-nomad movement that discovered Uruguay in the 2010s. Some barrios are informal and self-organised; others have semi-formal structures with dues for water and waste. Unwritten rules: respect the surroundings, quiet at night, leave no trash. Coverage in La Diaria, El Observador, and Galería magazine.
