What is VanBasket Index?
VanBasket Index shows how expensive food is in a country relative to the world average. World = 100. A score of 125 means food is 25% more expensive than world average. A score of 80 means food is 20% cheaper.
What data is used?
The baseline uses World Bank International Comparison Program (ICP) 2021 data for food & non-alcoholic beverages price levels. Monthly adjustments are made using IMF Consumer Price Index data.
How does the calculator work?
Select your home country and destination. The calculator shows the percentage difference and how much you'd spend on the same food basket at the destination if you spend 100 at home.
How often is data updated?
The IMF CPI data is updated monthly on the 1st. The World Bank ICP baseline is updated every 3-4 years when new rounds are published.
