Grey Water
Waste water, grey tank, sink water, drain water, gray water, used water
Grey water is used water from sinks, showers, and appliances (but not toilet waste) that is collected in a grey water tank or drains from the motorhome and must be disposed of at designated waste points.
In most EU countries it is illegal to discharge grey water onto the ground or into storm drains outside designated points. Grey water tank capacity ranges from 20 to 130 litres depending on the vehicle. Enzyme or biological additives (e.g. Fairchem Grey Water Treatment) help eliminate odour and break down organic matter. Some motorhomes have a built-in swing-out drain pipe; others use an underbody drain hose.
FAQ
Where can you legally empty grey water in Europe?
At dedicated service points: the Flot Bleu network in France, Stellplatz service columns in Germany, Área de servicio in Spain. Apps Park4Night and Campercontact mark spots with grey water disposal. Discharging into storm drains, rivers or onto the ground is illegal and can result in a fine.
How do you stop grey water from smelling in the tank?
Add biological or enzyme treatments (Thetford Grey Water, Sanliquid). Do not leave stagnant water in the tank for more than 2–3 days in warm weather. Flush the tank regularly with clean water. A blocked tank breather creates a vacuum that worsens the smell — check the vent pipe is clear.
