Border Crossing by Motorhome
motorhome border crossing, customs motorhome, vehicle documents border, EU border motorhome, Schengen border, ETIAS motorhome, green card border
Crossing an international border by motorhome requires presenting the vehicle registration certificate, Green Card insurance, valid passports and, depending on the destination, additional permits or vehicle inspections.
Within the Schengen Area, EU residents face no documentation checks. Entering Turkey: the vehicle is temporarily imported for up to 6 months (stamped in the passport). Entering the UK post-Brexit: full passport control. Morocco: a Fiche d'état civil may be required. From 2026 the EU ETIAS pre-authorisation will apply to non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area. Pets require a valid EU Health Certificate. Always carry original registration, not a copy.
FAQ
What documents do I need at a European border crossing?
Vehicle registration certificate (original), Green Card insurance, driving licence, valid passport (and visa if required). At non-EU borders (Turkey, Morocco, Ukraine) a separate vehicle import form may be completed on entry. Always carry originals — photocopies are rejected at many borders.
How long can a foreign motorhome stay in an EU country?
Under temporary import rules a non-EU registered vehicle may remain in the EU for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Exceeding this risks customs duties. Keep a written log of entry and exit dates. EU-registered vehicles have no such limit within the EU.
Do I need a carnet de passage to enter Turkey or Georgia?
No — both countries use a stamp-based vehicle import system rather than a carnet. Turkey stamps the vehicle into the owner's passport; the vehicle must leave with the same person. Georgia issues a temporary import permit at the border, valid for 90 days and extendable.
