RV Insurance & Green Card
Green Card insurance, motorhome insurance, Grüne Karte, carta verde, carnet de assurance, зелёная карта, MTPL motorhome, OSAGO motorhome, international insurance certificate
International RV travel requires at minimum a third-party liability policy and a Green Card — the International Motor Insurance Certificate recognised in 48+ countries as proof of liability coverage.
The Green Card is not a separate policy but a standardised certificate issued by your insurer, confirming liability coverage in all member countries (all EU/EEA states plus Turkey, Morocco, Georgia, Ukraine, Tunisia and others). EU residents' mandatory third-party insurance automatically extends to all EU states; the Green Card documents this for non-EU border crossings. For a motorhome used as a home, consider comprehensive cover including fire, theft and interior contents. Some countries (Turkey, Morocco) require the physical Green Card be shown on request — a digital version is not accepted everywhere.
FAQ
Do I need a Green Card to travel in EU countries?
Technically no for EU residents driving within the EU — all EU states recognise each other's mandatory third-party insurance. However, carrying a Green Card is strongly recommended: it is the fastest proof of insurance in an accident and is required at non-EU borders (Turkey, Morocco, Georgia, North African countries). Request a free Green Card from your insurer before departure.
Is standard car insurance valid for a converted van?
It depends on the vehicle registration. A van registered as a motorhome (in the V5C / Fahrzeugschein) should have a motorhome-specific policy. A converted van still registered as a commercial vehicle may not be covered for private residential use abroad. Always notify your insurer about the conversion and intended use before travel.
