Gas Cylinder Refill
LPG refill station, gas station campervan, GPL station, autogas station, butane refill, propane refill, gas bottle fill, АГЗС, GPL autoroute, where to fill gas bottle
Refilling a motorhome gas cylinder means topping up a refillable LPG container at an autogas pump at a petrol station, rather than exchanging the entire cylinder at a dealer.
Only refillable cylinders (Gaslow, Alugas, Truma TravelPower, fixed onboard LPG tanks) can be filled at a pump. Standard exchange cylinders (Calor, Campingaz, Primagaz) have exchange-only valves and must be swapped at a dealer. The 80% automatic fill-stop valve is required by law and prevents overfilling. Autogas pumps use regional adapter types: ACME thread (most of Europe), Dish (UK/Ireland), Polish bayonet (PL/CZ/SK/HU). Cost: €0.70–1.20/kg across the EU. Important: in Portugal and some Italian regions, self-service cylinder refill at petrol stations is not permitted — use a dedicated LPG dealer.
FAQ
How do I know if my gas cylinder can be refilled at a pump?
A refillable cylinder will have a fill valve (usually a yellow Acme or Dish fitting) with an 80% auto-stop float inside. Campingaz and Calor exchange cylinders do not have a fill valve — only an outlet valve. Gaslow, Alugas, and most fixed motorhome LPG tanks are designed for pump refill. If unsure, check the cylinder manufacturer's documentation.
What adapters do I need to refill gas in different European countries?
Carry a set of at least three adapters: ACME (most of Western/Southern Europe), Dish (UK and Ireland), and the Polish bayonet (common in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia). Adapter kits are sold by Gaslow and Outwell for ~€15–25 and cover 90% of European pumps. In France GPL is very common — ACME adapter required.
