Powered Roof Vent

A powered roof vent is a 12 V fan mounted in a roof aperture that actively draws air in or pushes it out, providing forced ventilation regardless of wind conditions. Most units include a reversible fan, rain sensor, fly screen and a manually or electrically operated cover.

Standard cutout sizes: 280 × 280 mm or 400 × 400 mm. Key brands: MaxxAir Maxx Fan (reversible, 10 speeds, ~35 dB), Fan-Tastic Vent 1250/6000, Dometic Fan-Tastic, Fiamma Turbo Kit. A single 280 mm fan ventilates a typical short-wheelbase van; longer vans benefit from two fans — one intake at the front, one exhaust at the rear.

FAQ

Should the roof fan extract or intake air?

Both modes are useful. Exhaust mode works best for cooling: warm air that rises to the roof is expelled and cool air is drawn in through open windows. Intake mode pulls in fresh air — useful when parked near smoke or odours. Reversible models like the MaxxAir let you switch direction as needed.

Can a roof fan be used in rain?

Many modern powered vents with a rain sensor automatically close when rain is detected. The MaxxAir fan can run in light rain thanks to its raised cowl that deflects raindrops. Always check your specific model's rain rating — some fans must be manually closed before rain begins.
