Camper Window
caravan window, motorhome window, van conversion window, Dometic S4 window, Seitz window, sliding camper window, flyscreen window, double-glazed van window, campervan window
A camper window is a purpose-built acrylic or polycarbonate window designed for caravan, motorhome and van conversion use. Unlike automotive glass, camper windows are lightweight, double-glazed, and include integral fly screens and blackout blinds. They are installed by cutting an aperture in the panel and sealing with butyl tape and caravan sealant.
Common brands: Dometic/Seitz S4 (framed slider), WeatherShield (UK), Brand Schöning (DE). Sizes are given as outer frame dimensions. Double-glazed units (total ~10 mm) insulate significantly better than single-glazed. In some EU countries, side windows in converted vans must be listed in the vehicle technical file to register the vehicle as a motorhome.
FAQ
Can I use a standard automotive window in a van conversion?
Technically yes, but camper-specific windows are better: they are double-glazed (better insulation), include built-in fly screens and blinds, are designed for flat wall panel installation rather than body curves, and are lighter. Automotive glazing may also cause issues at vehicle registration if the conversion is not type-approved.
How do I seal a camper window to prevent leaks?
Use butyl tape between the inner window frame and the panel, and seal the outer frame with self-levelling caravan sealant (Sika 512 or Sikaflex 252i). Never use silicone — it is not UV-stable and cracks over time. Inspect and reseal every 2–3 years.
