Fuel cost is one of the key factors when planning a road trip or motorhome journey. Price differences between countries can be tenfold: from under €0.20 per liter in Algeria to over €2.20 in the Netherlands.

Fuel in Europe

In EU countries, diesel and gasoline prices include excise duties and VAT. The most expensive fuel is in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany. Relatively cheaper in Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania. Data is published by the European Commission every Thursday.

Tips for Saving on Fuel

Fill up your tank in low-price countries before entering expensive ones. Use apps like TankerKönig (Germany) or Gaspy (New Zealand) to find cheap stations. Outside the EU, fuel is often subsidized — this explains very low prices in Algeria, Turkmenistan, and Egypt.

Why is LPG missing for some countries?

Not all official sources publish LPG data. Where data is unavailable, a dash is shown.

Why is fuel so cheap in Algeria, Turkmenistan, Egypt, and Kazakhstan?

These countries have government fuel subsidies or price regulation. Algeria and Turkmenistan are major oil producers that subsidize fuel by 70–90% below global prices. Egypt has historically used fuel subsidies as a social measure, though they have been gradually reduced in recent years. Kazakhstan is an oil-producing country where the state regulates domestic prices through KazMunayGas, keeping them well below European levels.

Can I fill up at these prices as a tourist?

It depends on the country. 🇩🇿 Algeria — entry is possible with a visa and fuel prices are the same for everyone, but payment must be in Algerian Dinars (DZD) cash — foreign bank cards do not work. 🇹🇲 Turkmenistan — one of the world's most closed countries: tourist entry is strictly limited, individual travel by personal vehicle is practically impossible, and a mandatory tour guide is required. 🇪🇬 Egypt — the most accessible of the subsidized countries: tourists pay the same prices, payment is in Egyptian Pounds (EGP), and cards are accepted at most petrol stations in cities. 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan — no restrictions for foreigners, petrol stations throughout the country, cards accepted in cities, cash in Tenge (KZT) is better in remote areas. 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan — fuel is cheaper than in Europe (market prices, but the country has a lower cost of living), no restrictions, cards accepted at most petrol stations, cash in Manat (AZN) preferred in rural areas.
