Trailer brake controller, electric brake controller, brake control module, Tekonsha P3, Prodigy P2
A brake controller is an in-cab device that sends current to the electric brakes on a trailer proportionally to the tow vehicle's deceleration. Required in the US and Canada for trailers and travel trailers equipped with electric brakes.
Two main types: proportional (accelerometer-based, modulates output with actual deceleration) and time-delayed (ramps up over a preset interval). Popular models: Tekonsha P3, Prodigy P2, Reese Brakeman. The "gain" setting is tuned on a flat road — properly adjusted, the trailer brakes feel firm without locking up. Europe rarely uses electric trailer brakes; inertia (surge) brakes dominate there.
