Driving licence category

Legal & Registration Europe

Driving licence category, Carnet B, B sınıfı, BE, motorhome licence, trailer licence

Driving licence category is the legal class required to drive a motorhome or tow a caravan combination according to weight and trailer rules.

In Spain people search for Carnet B; in Turkey, B Sınıfı and BE. The key limits are maximum authorised mass for motorhomes and combined train weight for car-plus-caravan setups.

FAQ

What licence do I need to drive a motorhome over 3,500 kg?

Category C1 for motorhomes between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg MAM; category C for over 7,500 kg. Most EU motorhomes are under 3,500 kg and require only category B. Always check your specific vehicle's MAM in the registration document.

When does towing a caravan require category BE?

Category BE is required when the trailer's own MAM exceeds 750 kg AND the total combination (tow vehicle + trailer) exceeds 3,500 kg. Example: 2,000 kg car + 1,600 kg caravan = 3,600 kg — BE needed. Rules are identical across the EU but individual national implementations vary slightly.
