Backcountry camping is the Parks Canada term for wilderness camping at sites reachable only by foot, canoe, or bike, without road access. Permits are usually required; facilities are minimal — pit toilets, bear hangs, designated tent pads.
Iconic Canadian backcountry: West Coast Trail (BC), Killarney (ON), Tonquin Valley (Jasper), La Mauricie canoe routes (QC). Permits via Parks Canada or provincial systems; fees vary by park and season. Compulsory: bear-resistant food storage, pack-in pack-out, fire restrictions, no motorised vehicles. Not for motorhomes — vehicle stays at the trailhead.
