Bear locker — Canadian food storage box

Lifestyle Canada USA

Bear locker, bear box, food locker Canada, bear-resistant food storage, bear cache, Parks Canada food locker

A bear locker (or "bear box", "food locker") is a steel cabinet at a Canadian or US campsite for storing food and scented items overnight, out of reach of bears. Required at sites in grizzly and black-bear country (Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Glacier, Algonquin in spring, much of BC).

Typical size: 86 × 38 × 38 cm. Must hold all food, garbage, cooler, dishes, toiletries, and any scented items — no exceptions. Backcountry sites usually have a bear cache cable or pole instead. Improper storage can lead to fines and possible campsite closure and a destroyed campsite. RVs and hard-sided trailers are considered "bear-safe" for storage in most parks, but soft-side trailers and roof-top tents are not.
