VanSky helps you see at a glance where it will be most comfortable over the next week — in which country, and in which of its cities. A single 0–100 score brings together the real weather: warmth, wind, rain, sun for solar panels and sea temperature; the forecast runs 7 days ahead and is updated several times a day. Scores above 70 mean comfortable conditions for camping and outdoor travel; below 40 expect rain, strong wind or cold. The data comes from the Open-Meteo weather model covering 162 countries, and every country page breaks the score down by city with a 7-day outlook. Good for any trip — by car, motorhome, caravan or with a tent.

VanSky Index

A weather comfort index for travel: a 0–100 score. Recalculated daily from live weather data — temperature, rainfall, wind and sun.

80–100 Ideal
60–79 Comfortable
40–59 Acceptable
20–39 Challenging
0–19 Extreme

How it's calculated:

  • Thermal comfort 35% — temperature + humidity
  • Sunshine 25% — panel charge, mood; in heat the sun is no longer a bonus
  • Precipitation 25% — rain → muddy ground
  • Wind 15% — awning, driving, noise
  • Extremes override all: frost, heat, storm, downpour
  • Heat counts by feels-like temperature: at 32°+ the score can’t reach “Comfortable”, muggy nights lower it further
  • A dangerous day drags the week down: a storm or downpour in the forecast keeps the week from being “Comfortable”
  • Bonus: warm sea, high panel output

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VanSky index?
VanSky is a 0–100 numeric index showing how comfortable today's weather is for travel. A value above 80 means ideal conditions — warm temperature, light wind, plenty of sun, no rain. Between 60 and 79 it's comfortable for most travellers. Between 40 and 59 conditions are acceptable but may need planning. Below 40 are tough conditions: cold, heavy rain or strong wind. The index is recalculated several times a day from real Open-Meteo satellite data.
What data is used to calculate the index?
The VanSky index is calculated using six weighted components from Open-Meteo real-time data: thermal comfort (temperature combined with humidity), precipitation amount, wind strength, peak sun hours for solar panel output, sea surface temperature for coastal areas, and a storm penalty applied during severe weather events. Each component is normalized to a 0–100 scale and combined into the final score. The calculation runs several times a day to reflect rapidly changing weather patterns.
How many countries does VanSky cover?
VanSky tracks weather comfort across 162 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America — the most popular destinations for travellers by car, motorhome, caravan or tent. For each country, hundreds of cities and towns are monitored simultaneously. Data comes from Open-Meteo, which aggregates global weather observations and forecasts at 15-minute resolution, making VanSky one of the most up-to-date weather tools for road travellers.
