Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VanSky index?
VanSky is a numerical index from 0 to 100 showing how comfortable weather conditions are for van life today. A score above 80 means ideal conditions — warm temperatures, low wind, good solar hours, no rain. Scores of 60–79 are comfortable for most travelers. Between 40 and 59 conditions are acceptable but may require planning. Below 40 means challenging conditions such as cold, heavy rain, or strong wind that make van living difficult. The index is recalculated every 3 hours from real Open-Meteo satellite data.
What data is used to calculate the index?
The VanSky index is calculated using six weighted components from Open-Meteo real-time data: thermal comfort (temperature combined with humidity), precipitation amount, wind strength, peak sun hours for solar panel output, sea surface temperature for coastal areas, and a storm penalty applied during severe weather events. Each component is normalized to a 0–100 scale and combined into the final score. The calculation runs every 3 hours to reflect rapidly changing weather patterns.
How many countries does VanSky cover?
VanSky currently tracks weather comfort in 162 countries spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America — the most popular van life and motorhome travel destinations worldwide. For each country, hundreds of cities and localities are monitored simultaneously. The data is sourced from Open-Meteo, which aggregates global weather observations and forecasts at 15-minute resolution, making VanSky one of the most up-to-date weather tools for road travelers.
