Carte Grise — French vehicle registration document

Legal & Registration France

Carte Grise, certificat d'immatriculation, French V5, French registration certificate, French vehicle title

Carte Grise (officially: Certificat d'immatriculation) is the French vehicle registration document. It records all key parameters: VIN, owner, PTAC, PTRA, PVOM, category (M1, VASP Caravane), seat count, etc. For motorhomers the key fields are J.1 (VASP category) and F.2 (PTAC).

Issuance and updates run through the ANTS portal (ants.gouv.fr). After a conversion (RTI/DREAL) a new Carte Grise is issued with the updated PTAC and category. Cost depends on region and cheval fiscal; calculate via the ANTS portal. For foreign owners, immatriculation provisoire (a 4-month temporary registration) is available. On a private sale, the seller must mark the original "mention barré".
