LHD / RHD (drive side)

Legal & Registration

LHD, RHD, left hand drive, right hand drive, left-hooker, drive side, steering side

LHD means the steering wheel is on the left, RHD on the right. Mainland Europe and North America drive LHD; the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Japan drive RHD.

Drive side affects more than the driving. On a RHD motorhome the habitation door and awning are usually on the nearside for UK use, which puts them facing the road rather than the pitch on continental campsites. Overtaking on narrow roads from the "wrong" side needs a co-driver to call it. Taking a RHD vehicle abroad requires headlamp beam deflectors; permanently importing one means re-homologation, where the drive side itself is legal but the lighting normally has to change.
