We respect the rights of authors and data owners — and expect the same for ours.

Who we are

OpenVan.camp is a multilingual hub for travel on wheels. It brings together a news aggregator, a map of campsites and fuel stations, a roadbook for route planning, an events calendar, a guide to licence plates of the world, visa calculators, fuel and grocery prices, the VanSky weather index, quizzes, a glossary, and a public API and MCP server for developers and AI assistants.

We build the site ourselves, but much of its data comes from open and official sources. This page explains what is ours, what comes from other sources and on what terms, how you may use our data, and how a rights holder can ask us to remove material.

What is ours, what comes from open sources, what is aggregated

Our own work:

  • editorial texts: guides, VanLife Weekly, What's New, the glossary, quizzes, event descriptions and vehicle import rules;
  • methods and calculations: the VanSky weather index, the VanBasket grocery basket, trip, fuel and visa-stay calculators, toll estimates, the roadbook;
  • data checking and compilation: our editors verify fuel prices by country against primary sources by hand;
  • licence plate images in the licence plates guide, drawn by our own engine (fonts and emblems — see below);
  • site design, social preview cards (OG images) and code.

Data from open and official sources (credited; details in the list below): maps, routes, campsites, weather, exchange rates, holidays, natural hazards, part of the fuel and grocery prices, photos of sights.

Aggregated with attribution — the News section and the events linked to it: a headline, a short excerpt, a preview image and a direct link to the original. We do not reproduce, store or distribute the full text of other publishers' articles. This is standard practice for news aggregators such as Google News.

Data sources and their licences

  • Maps (basemap) — OpenStreetMap via OpenFreeMap and OpenMapTiles; dark theme — CARTO; satellite — Esri World Imagery. OSM — ODbL 1.0; CARTO and Esri — under the terms of these services.
  • Campsites and places on the map — OpenStreetMap (Overpass), Overture Maps Places, Recreation.gov (RIDB), DATAtourisme, campsite websites, OSM notes. ODbL 1.0; CDLA-Permissive-2.0; US government data; Licence Ouverte; link to the campsite website.
  • Photos of places and sights — Wikimedia Commons, Panoramax, Wikidata; text excerpts — Wikipedia. The licence and author are shown with each photo; Wikipedia texts — CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Routing, geocoding, elevation — OSRM, OpenRouteService (HeiGIT), Nominatim, Terrain Tiles (Mapzen / AWS). OpenStreetMap data — ODbL 1.0; services — under their own terms.
  • Weather, VanSky, climate — Open-Meteo, ERA5 / Copernicus, GeoNames, Wikidata. CC BY 4.0.
  • Fuel prices — government websites and national open data, the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin, Tankerkönig, prix-carburants.gouv.fr, EIA, the World Bank and others; the full list is on each country's page. Licences of the primary sources (Licence Ouverte 2.0, Open Government Licence v3.0 and others).
  • Fuel stations on the map — national open data on station prices, OpenStreetMap, PricesHub.ge. Shown on each station card.
  • EV charging — Eurostat, operator tariffs (IONITY, Allego, Fastned and others), EIA, ElCom, Open Charge Map. Under the terms of the sources.
  • Oil price — EIA, FRED, Brent/WTI futures from Yahoo Finance. Under the terms of the sources.
  • Exchange rates — currency-api (fawazahmed0), ExchangeRate-API, Frankfurter (ECB), the Bank of Russia, national central banks. Under the terms of the sources.
  • Groceries, VanBasket — World Bank ICP 2021, IMF, Eurostat, FAOSTAT, Open Prices (Open Food Facts), WhereNext, retail chain price files, reader reports. CC BY 4.0; Open Prices — ODbL 1.0; chain data — under price transparency laws.

  • Vehicle import, customs — official customs websites, linked from each rule. Quotations with a link to the source.
  • Holidays — Nager.Date, OpenHolidays, Bison Futé. MIT; ODbL 1.0.
  • Power plugs and voltage — Wikipedia, Wikidata, the Caravan and Motorhome Club. CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Hazards and wildfires — NASA FIRMS, GDACS, the UK Foreign Office (FCDO). Open data; Open Government Licence v3.0.
  • Licence plate fonts — Noto, Oswald, DIN 1451 (Peter Wiegel), D-DIN and others; some glyphs are recreated from photos on Wikimedia Commons. Mostly SIL OFL 1.1; for some countries CC BY-SA or CC0 — downloads are open only where the licence allows it.

If you own one of these sources and think we credit you incorrectly or insufficiently, write to us and we will fix it.

How you can use our data

OpenVan.camp data — prices, indices, rules, reference tables — is available through the public API, the MCP server and the ChatGPT app under the CC BY 4.0 licence. You may use it in any project, commercial ones included, on one condition:

  • place a visible link to OpenVan.camp next to the data, for example: Data: OpenVan.camp (CC BY 4.0). Every API response includes a ready-made snippet (attribution_html). If an AI agent writes your code, ask it to keep this link.

Exceptions:

  • data derived from sources under ODbL (OpenStreetMap, OpenHolidays, Open Prices) or CC BY-SA (Wikipedia) keeps the licence of the primary source — the API response states it;
  • news texts and images belong to their authors and publishers — our licence does not cover them;
  • editorial content (guides, VanLife Weekly, What's New) — all rights reserved; you may quote it with a link to the page;
  • the SDK and MCP server code in our open repository is released under the MIT licence.

Images

  • News. Preview thumbnails from other publishers are loaded through a third-party proxy (wsrv.nl), resized and not stored permanently on our servers. On site pages the source is credited next to them. For social media and search previews we use our own generated cards, not the source's photo.
  • Events. Photos are provided by organisers or taken from their official pages; some are stored on our server. The source is credited next to the photo.
  • Places and sights. Photos from Wikimedia Commons and Panoramax are shown with their author and licence.
  • Licence plates. Plate images are drawn by our engine; they are schematic samples, not photos of real vehicles.
  • AI-generated images. VanLife Weekly covers, the country background collages in the licence plates guide and some event illustrations are created by us with a neural network.
  • Partner content. Texts and images are supplied by the partner, who is responsible for them and for the rights to them. Such content is labelled "Partner content" or "Advertisement".

We will promptly remove any image upon a valid request from the rights holder.

User content

Published roadbook routes, price reports, and notes on map places and visa rules are submitted by users. By submitting material, the author confirms they have the right to share it. If such material infringes your rights, let us know — we will check and remove it.

Automated processing and AI

News headlines and descriptions, as well as descriptions of events and places, may be translated, summarised, grouped or extracted from publications using AI. This processing helps people find and compare information but may contain inaccuracies. Always check the original source via the link for reliable information.

OpenVan.camp does not verify or guarantee the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, copyright compliance or legality of third-party material — news, source websites, partner publications and data from external services. Links to third-party resources are provided for information and navigation purposes.

How to file a complaint (DMCA / Takedown)

A complaint may concern any section of the site: news, events, images, data or user content. Send a written notice to:

The notice must include:

  1. Description of the protected work — what exactly belongs to you
  2. URL on our site — the specific pages with the material
  3. URL of the original — a link to the authorised version (if any)
  4. Rights holder details — full name or organisation, email, postal address
  5. Good-faith statement — that the use is not authorised by the rights holder, their agent or the law
  6. Accuracy statement — that the information is accurate and you are the rights holder or their authorised agent (under penalty of perjury)
  7. What you request — remove the whole card / remove the image / change the headline, description or source credit

Counter-notification

If you believe material was removed by mistake, send a counter-notification to [email protected]. It must include:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature
  2. A description of the removed material and the URL where it appeared
  3. A statement under penalty of perjury that the material was removed by mistake or misidentification
  4. Your name, address, phone number and consent to the jurisdiction of the competent court

Opt-out for source websites

If you own a website whose material appears in News or Events and want to limit this, write to [email protected] stating:

  • your site's domain;
  • what to do: stop adding new publications / remove cards already added / not use images from the domain;
  • proof of authority (for example, an email from an address on that domain or a DNS record).

Once your authority is confirmed, we will tell you what we have done within 5 business days.

Response times

  • Images — removed within 24 hours of a valid request
  • Texts, links, data — reviewed within 48 hours
  • In urgent cases we try to act faster

Bad-faith requests

By sending a notice or counter-notification, you confirm that you act in good faith and provide accurate information. Knowingly false claims about rights or authority may lead to liability under applicable law and are grounds for refusing to consider the request.

Personal data in requests

Data from your notice is used only to review the request and contact you. We do not share it with third parties, except where needed to resolve the dispute (for example, with the source of the material) or where the law expressly requires it. Do not include personal data in your notice beyond what is needed.
