VASP — French motorhome registration category

Legal & Registration France

VASP, Véhicule Automoteur Spécialisé, VASP Caravane, French motorhome homologation, conversion approval France

VASP (Véhicule Automoteur Spécialisé) is the French registration category for specialized vehicles. The "VASP Caravane" sub-category is required for every motorhome and converted campervan registered in France. Without VASP, the vehicle cannot legally be used as habitable and cannot be insured as a camper.

To obtain VASP Caravane, a converted van must undergo Réception à Titre Isolé (RTI) through the regional DREAL/DRIEAT/DEAL authority: conformity to EN 1646 (habitation), a fixed bed, a table, a seat, a wardrobe, and a kitchen unit. The process takes 2–4 months and costs €800–2,500. Once granted, "VASP" appears on the Carte Grise, field J.1 (national vehicle category field in France). Other EU states may accept VASP documentation; national procedures vary.
