Aire
Aire de camping-car, motorhome aire, motorhome stop, France aire, aire municipale
An aire is a designated motorhome parking area in France and other countries offering free or low-cost overnight parking with basic facilities such as fresh water, waste disposal, and sometimes electricity.
France has over 4,500 aires, many located in village and town centres. Many are free; paid ones cost €5–15 per night. The Camping-Car Park network (850+ aires with automated payment terminals) has commercialised many formerly free spots. In Spain and Portugal similar facilities are called "área de autocaravanas". The Park4Night app shows up-to-date aire status with user reviews.
FAQ
How do you find a free aire in France?
Use the Park4Night or Camping-Car Park apps — they list hundreds of free aires with photos and reviews. Many town halls provide free aires near attractions to encourage motorhome tourism. Always check recent reviews as free sites sometimes become paid or are closed temporarily.
What is the difference between an aire and a campsite?
An aire is a dedicated motorhome-only area (usually no tents, tables or chairs set out), often with minimal or no facilities. A campsite offers marked pitches, full sanitary blocks, electric hook-ups and more amenities. Aires are cheaper and more freedom-oriented; campsites offer more comfort.
