Vehicle Types Latin America

Carpa de techo, roof-top tent, RTT, vehicle roof tent, Chile RTT, 4x4 carpa, hispano LatAm roof tent

Carpa de techo is the Spanish-American name for a roof-top tent (RTT): a folding tent that mounts on a 4×4, pickup, or SUV roof rack. Very popular in Chile and Argentina for trips to Patagonia and Atacama, where the ground is rocky or wildlife-prone.

Two types: hard-shell (clamshell) and soft-shell (open with a ladder). 2–4 person capacity. Brands seen in LatAm: Iron Man 4×4, ARB, James Baroud, Roof Top Overland (Chile). 50–90 kg on the roof — check the roof and rack load limits of the host vehicle. Setup time 2–5 minutes.
