Gas Cylinder

Gas & Heating

Gas bottle, gas canister, propane bottle, butane canister, Campingaz, Calor, Gaslow

A gas cylinder is a portable pressurised steel or aluminium container filled with LPG (propane or butane), used to supply gas appliances in motorhomes and caravans.

Cylinder sizes range from 1kg camping canisters to 47kg exchange bottles. Exchange schemes (Calor in the UK, Campingaz across Europe) allow swapping empty for full. Refillable cylinders (Gaslow, Alugas) offer cost savings.

FAQ

Which is better for a motorhome — propane or butane?

Propane (working down to −42°C) is the better all-season choice. Butane stops vaporising at around −0.5°C and is unusable in cold weather. Most European motorhome appliances are rated for propane at 30–50 mbar. Campingaz's C206/C307/C309 are butane/propane blends — convenient but expensive per kilo vs. refillable propane.

How long does a 6 kg gas cylinder last in a motorhome?

Typical use (cooking, hot water via a 10 L Truma boiler): 5–10 days in mild weather. With space heating in cold weather: as little as 1–3 days. An 11 kg or 13 kg refillable cylinder, or a fixed LPG tank (30–80 L), is far more practical for long trips.
