EV Charging Costs in Europe: What Travellers Need to Know

EV charging costs vary significantly by country and charging type. The difference between home electricity and public DC fast charging can be 3–5×: from €0.07/kWh at home in Bulgaria to €0.79/kWh at IONITY fast chargers in Germany.

EV Charging Prices Across Europe

Home electricity in the EU ranges from €0.07/kWh (Bulgaria, Hungary) to €0.35/kWh (Germany, Denmark). Public AC charging (7–22 kW) costs €0.30–0.50/kWh. DC fast chargers (50–350 kW) from IONITY, Allego and Fastned cost €0.50–0.79/kWh. For long trips, charging overnight at home or in countries with cheap electricity is significantly more economical.

Home Charging vs Public Charging Stations

Home electricity is the most economical way to charge your EV — typically 3–5× cheaper than public AC and 5–8× cheaper than DC fast charging. AC chargers (Type 2) suit overnight charging or long stops — 6–10 hours for a full charge. DC fast chargers (CCS/CHAdeMO) charge to 80% in 20–40 minutes but cost considerably more.

Data Sources

Home electricity prices are sourced from Eurostat (nrg_pc_204) — official EU statistics for residential consumers. Public charging tariffs for IONITY, Allego and Fastned are updated from operators' current price lists. Data is updated weekly.

Who This Tool Is For

This tool is useful for EV owners planning trips across Europe who want to estimate charging costs in advance. It helps you route through countries with cheaper electricity, balance charging speed against cost, and compare real running costs for electric vehicles across different countries.

Frequently Asked Questions About EV Charging

How often is charging price data updated?

Home electricity data is updated weekly based on Eurostat statistics. IONITY, Allego and Fastned tariffs are updated when operators change their price lists.

What is the difference between AC and DC charging?

AC (alternating current) is slow charging at 7–22 kW — 6–10 hours for a full charge, suitable for overnight charging or long stops. DC (direct current) is fast charging at 50–350 kW — charges to 80% in 20–40 minutes but costs 1.5–2× more than AC.

Why is home charging cheaper than public charging?

Public charging includes the cost of equipment, site rental, maintenance and operator profit. Home electricity is just the kWh tariff with no added markups. A full charge of a 60 kWh battery at home costs €4–15, while a DC fast charge costs €25–50.

Which countries are cheapest for EV charging?

For home electricity, the cheapest countries are Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia and Kazakhstan (from €0.07/kWh). In Western Europe prices are higher: Germany, Netherlands, Denmark — €0.30–0.38/kWh. Public charging is cheapest in Norway and Sweden despite high household electricity prices — operators compete aggressively on charging tariffs.

How much does a full EV charge cost in Europe?

Cost depends on battery capacity and charging type. For a typical EV with a 60 kWh battery: at home in Bulgaria — around €4–5, in Germany — €18–20. At a public AC charger in Europe — €18–25. At an IONITY DC fast charger — €35–50.

How do I find EV charging stations while travelling?

Use apps like ABRP (A Better Route Planner), PlugShare or Chargemap — they show charging stations across Europe with prices and reviews. IONITY, Allego and Fastned have their own network maps. Tesla Superchargers are primarily for Tesla vehicles, though some stations are now open to other brands.

At Geumneung Beach, tourists complain about 'parking squatters' in motorhomes

On Jeju Island's Geumneung Beach, tourists are voicing frustration over motorhomes occupying parking spots for days, effectively blocking access for other visitors. One tourist reported on social media that a motorhome remained in the same spot for over 30 hours, with its owners ignoring requests to move. Local authorities said they would investigate but noted there is no direct ban on long-term motorhome parking at the beach.

Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education launches 2026 family camping program

The Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education (South Korea) announced the first semester of the 2026 family camping program 'On(溫) Family, Heart ON(溫)'. The program targets families with children from 4th grade of elementary school to 2nd grade of middle school. It will be held at four auto-camping sites built on former school grounds, including a new site in Yeongju. A total of 15 sessions are planned per year: 6 in the first semester (June 6 – July 5) and 9 in the second (September 5 – October 25).
