Acampada libre is the Spanish legal concept of camping outside authorised campsites. It is regulated by autonomous communities and is generally banned on the coast, in natural parks, on municipal forests, and across the entire maritime-terrestrial public domain.
Not to be confused with «pernoctar en autocaravana» (sleeping inside a parked vehicle, generally tolerated) — acampada libre means pitching tents or setting up outdoor equipment, which triggers stricter rules. Fines for illegal wild camping range from €60 to €6,000 depending on the region (Ley de Costas, autonomous community decrees). Some exceptions exist in parts of Galicia, Asturias, and the Pyrenees — always verify the specific autonomous community law before camping out.
