How the 90 days per year rule works

1

From 2025, foreigners from visa-free countries can stay in Russia for up to 90 days total within one calendar year (January 1 to December 31).

2

Entry and exit days count as full days of stay. Days are summed across all trips in the year.

3

The limit resets completely on January 1st each year. Unused days do not carry over to the next year.

!

Citizens of EAEU countries (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan) have no stay limits and can work without a patent.

Visa-free entry to Russia 2026: new rules

From January 1, 2025, new visa-free stay rules apply in Russia. Foreigners from visa-free countries can now stay in Russia for up to 90 days total within one calendar year.

Country categories

  • EAEU countries (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan): no time limits, right to work without patent
  • Visa-free CIS countries (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Moldova, Azerbaijan): up to 90 days per year, work patent required
  • Other visa-free countries: conditions depend on bilateral agreements

New rules from 2025

Federal Law No. 260-FZ changed how stay days are counted. Instead of the 90/180 sliding window, the 90 days per calendar year rule now applies. Also, from June 30, 2025, mandatory entry notification via the 'Gosuslugi RuID' app 72 hours before arrival is introduced.

Documents for entry to Russia

For visa-free entry to Russia you need:

  • Valid passport
  • Migration card (filled at border)
  • Migration registration within 7 working days

Consequences of overstaying

Overstaying results in fines from 2000 to 7000 rubles, deportation, and entry ban to Russia. Overstaying more than 180 days results in a 10-year ban.

Frequently asked questions about Russia visa

How many days can I stay in Russia without a visa?

From 2025, citizens of visa-free countries (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Moldova, Azerbaijan, etc.) can stay in Russia for up to 90 days total per calendar year. EAEU citizens (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan) have no limits.

How does the 90/year rule differ from the old 90/180?

Previously, the 90/180 sliding window rule applied. Now it's 90 days per calendar year — from January 1 to December 31. This means you can no longer 'accumulate' days by crossing between years as before.

When does the 90-day limit reset?

The limit resets completely on January 1st each year. If you used 90 days in 2025, you'll have 90 days again from January 1, 2026.

Do I need a work patent to work in Russia?

EAEU citizens can work in Russia without a patent. Citizens of other visa-free countries must obtain a patent for legal employment.

What is migration registration?

Foreign citizens must register for migration within 7 working days of entry. The receiving party (hotel, landlord, employer) submits notification to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

What happens if I overstay?

Overstaying results in fines from 2000 to 7000 rubles, deportation, and entry ban to Russia for 3 to 10 years depending on violation length.
