Fuel Prices in Europe: What Every Traveller Should Know
Fuel is one of the biggest costs of travelling by motorhome or campervan. Prices across Europe vary significantly from country to country — the gap between the cheapest and most expensive markets can reach 40–60%, making a real difference to your travel budget.
What Determines the Price of Fuel
The pump price is made up of several components: the commodity price of crude oil and refined products, excise duty and VAT (which can account for up to 60% of the retail price in some EU countries), and distributor and forecourt margins. Each EU country sets its own excise rate above the common minimum — which is why the Netherlands and Finland are consistently among the most expensive markets, while Poland and Bulgaria remain among the most affordable.
How to Save on Fuel When Travelling
When planning a multi-country route, it pays to fill up before entering a high-price country — for example, before crossing into the Netherlands, Switzerland, or Finland. Use our calculator to estimate costs for each leg in advance and identify the best places to fill up.
