Temporary vehicle import to Italy
A visa and a vehicle are different law: the person and the car are given their terms by different authorities, and those terms need not match.

- How the term is counted

- Carnet de Passages

- Extension
- Possible
The official page is for non-residents and foreign-registered vehicles, but it does not clearly state a tourist-only temporary import limit or Carnet requirement. It also appears to address use in Italy generally, not necessarily customs temporary importation for tourists.
"The discharge of the temporary admission procedure in the case of means of transport and containers shall take place within the following time-limits from the time the goods are placed under the procedure: … (c) means of road transport privately used: … other cases … 6 months" — Article 217, Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/2446. (Italy applies EU customs law directly: a non-EU resident brings in a private car on non-EU plates under temporary admission with full relief from duties for 6 months; a carnet de passages is not required, and customs may extend the period under Article 251 UCC. The count runs from the placement under the procedure, i.e. from each new entry.)
