Temporary vehicle import to China
A visa and a vehicle are different law: the person and the car are given their terms by different authorities, and those terms need not match.
- Maximum term
- 90
- How the term is counted
- together with the driver’s stay
- Carnet de Passages
- No data
- Extension
- Not available
Tourist temporary entry of foreign private vehicles is limited to "no more than three months" and is linked to the endorsed entry approval and the driver’s permitted stay. Plates and permits cannot be extended. Official GACC rules on temporary import of goods allow up to 6 months with extensions, but those are for general goods, not the specific tourist-vehicle regime.
"Provisions on the administration of temporarily entering motor vehicles and drivers" (Ministry of Public Security Order No. 90): the rules apply to vehicles and drivers "temporarily entering the territory of the People's Republic of China for no more than 3 months"; "the validity of the temporary-entry vehicle plate and driving permit shall match the period endorsed on the entry approval document, but shall not exceed three months at most. The validity of the temporary-entry plate and driving permit may not be extended." The application for temporary plates is filed within 2 days of entry; driving is allowed only on approved routes/regions.
