TRA and related EAC rules state a 12‑month limit for temporary importation of vehicles and goods, but a separate (non‑customs) U.S. Embassy note says tourists’ cars are admitted for 14 days, extendable in 14‑day steps up to 3 months. The 12‑month customs ceiling is the legal maximum for temporary import; in practice, immigration stay or shorter administrative limits may constrain tourists to a shorter period.

Tanzania Revenue Authority, 'Temporary Importation': "A person who intends to make a temporary entry to a Partner State shall be granted temporary free admission upon application to and approval by the commissioner subject to their re-exportation back to the exporting country upon expiry of the allowed period of stay ... An importer shall deposit an amount of cash sufficient to cover the duty on the goods, or shall execute a security bond in the Customs Bond Form as the proper officer may determine ... Vehicles and goods imported temporarily shall be re-exported (taken back) within a period of twelve months from the date of importation." The 12 months run from the date of importation (per entry). A Carnet de Passages requirement is not mentioned in the TRA text (a deposit or a customs bond is specified), hence carnet_required=null; applies_to='unclear', since the regime is described generally for any temporary entry, with no separate paragraph on tourists.
