Temporary vehicle import to Canada
A visa and a vehicle are different law: the person and the car are given their terms by different authorities, and those terms need not match.
- Maximum term

- How the term is counted
- together with the driver’s stay
- Carnet de Passages
- Not required
- Extension

CBSA memorandum allows up to 12 months for visitors’ vehicles, but Transport Canada also states the vehicle may not remain longer than the limit on the visitor’s visa, work permit or other customs document. In practice, the allowed stay is capped by the person’s own authorized stay, up to a maximum of 12 months per temporary import.
[conveyances imported by a visitor must be exported] until the earlier of: the expiration of the date that the visitor has declared ... the visitor intends to leave Canada, and 12 months after the date of importation ... the Minister may extend the length of time during which any imported baggage or conveyances ... may remain in Canada: in the case of baggage or conveyances imported by a visitor, to any date up to 18 months after the date of importation.
