On July 13 at about 12:04 p.m., firefighters were called to Morkūnų Street in Mediniai Strėvininkai village after a camper fire spread to an outbuilding. Upon arrival, the outdoor kitchen with an extension was burning; the camper, a Zuggabel, was already destroyed. The fire burned off the kitchen roof, damaged three exterior walls, and caused smoke damage. No smoke detector was present. An Opel car was saved. An investigation is ongoing.
A resident reported that camper vans with foreign plates are illegally parking near a kindergarten and sculpture park. Police have opened four administrative cases.
In Lithuania, the average campervan rental price is around €88 per day, ranging from €30–35 for a towable caravan to €170 for premium 2025 models. Experts highlight that early booking and longer rental periods can lead to significant savings, especially during the peak summer season when prices rise by 30–50%. According to Eurostat, in 2025, EU campsites and motorhome parks recorded 413 million overnight stays, a 28.5% increase over the past decade.
Starting July 7, 2026, all new motorhomes, campervans, and caravans registered in the EU must be equipped with mandatory advanced safety systems. These include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver drowsiness detection, and others. The added equipment is expected to raise vehicle prices by €1,000 to €3,000. The rules also apply to self-built camper conversions if they are registered as new vehicles.
Laima Krasauskienė from Klaipėda and her partner Kazys have visited 32 countries in four years using an old camper purchased for €4,000. The couple travels solely on their pensions: each receives €800 per month, plus an additional €51. They avoid expensive campsites, preferring wild camping, and cook from supplies like canned meat and mushrooms. Future plans include Turkey, Bulgaria, and Georgia.
In Lithuania, police can check documents for both the car and the trailer. According to traffic rules, the maximum speed with a trailer on highways is 90 km/h, on other roads — 70 km/h. The trailer must be registered, have a valid technical inspection and insurance. Fines for missing documents or violations can reach up to 100 euros.
