Bürstner, based in Kehl, has announced it will cease production of caravans (trailers) from the 2027 season. The decision is part of the 'Bürstner Reloaded' strategy and is driven by a sustained decline in demand for trailers after the pandemic: in 2025, caravan sales in Europe fell by 11%, and in Germany by 13.4%, while the motorhome market grew by 0.6%.
Caravan production was historic for Bürstner — the company's history began with them in the 1950s. In 2026, only one caravan line remained out of 15 — the anniversary B66, produced for the brand's 66th anniversary, which has now also been discontinued. As part of restructuring, about 40 jobs were cut at plants in Kehl and Wissembourg, but no mass layoffs are planned.
The company will focus on motorhomes and campervans, reducing its model range to three series: Papillon, Habiton, and Signature. The Signature SFT 7.0 was named ANWB/NKC 'Camper of the Year 2026'. Management does not rule out a return to caravans in the future, but all resources are currently directed at the motorhome segment. After-sales service and spare parts for previously produced Bürstner caravans will be fully maintained. Within the Erwin Hymer Group, caravan production continues at Dethleffs, LMC, and Eriba.
