Caravan-Salon Düsseldorf: Record Innovations and Trend Toward Self-Sufficiency

Volkswagen has officially introduced the ID. California Cruise, an electric camper based on the ID. Buzz, at the Caravan Salon 2026. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027. The model features sleeping accommodation for two, V2L capability with up to 2 kW continuous power (3.6 kW peak), and a California Mode that keeps lights and USB ports running for up to 48 hours.

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. California Cruise, the first all-electric model in its California camper range, based on the ID. Buzz Pro and available in short- and long-wheelbase versions, with deliveries in Europe planned for 2027. The camper features a two-meter bed platform with a foldable mattress, window ventilation panels, and shades for all windows, plus a California mode for climate control, device charging, and interior lighting, and V2L capability via a PowerSocket adapter. Volkswagen has not equipped it with a kitchen or pop-up roof, and is preparing a similar ID. Buzz Tourer configuration for the U.S. market; prices have not been announced.

On Friday at about 11:40 a.m. on Reinbergstrasse in Harburg, a motorhome with Spanish plates hit a traffic mirror and continued driving. A 48-year-old witness reported the incident to the police. Damage was estimated at 500 euros; the city of Harburg has been informed.

The Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf has opened and will run until September 6. Organizers highlight that Germany remains Europe's leading caravanning nation. The popularity of this form of travel is attributed to the ability to plan routes individually and control costs. Interest in lesser-known destinations is also growing.

At the Caravan Salon 2026 in Düsseldorf, Ective will present the rollable solar awning SolarShade for campervans and vans. The device generates up to 4.5 kWh per day, powering a refrigerator and lighting. Price starts at €3,999, availability from 2027. Renogy and other manufacturers have also announced similar solutions.

At the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf 2026, the two most expensive motorhomes are the Volkner Performance S at 2.26 million euros and the Vario Perfect 1200 QS Platinum at 2.27 million euros, with a combined value of about 4.53 million euros. The Volkner features a 12-meter body on a Volvo chassis with a 500-hp engine and an integrated garage for a Porsche 911, while the Vario has a 12-meter body on a Mercedes Actros chassis with a 530-hp engine and four slide-outs expanding living space to 36 square meters.
