In Brief

New caravan registrations in the Netherlands surged 18% in March–April 2026, while total camper vehicles hit a record 637,000. However, a doubled road tax on motorhomes has caused a 300% spike in used listings and a 7% sales drop, with 55,000 vehicles temporarily deregistered.

The Dutch recreational vehicle market shows contrasting trends. New caravan sales soared: 2,152 units were registered in March–April 2026 (+18% year-on-year), and 2,985 since January (+10%). New motorhome sales also rose 9% to 1,297 units in the first four months. The total number of caravans and motorhomes on Dutch roads reached a record 637,000. Popularity is growing among younger buyers: the number of caravan owners aged 18–26 increased by 6%.

However, since 1 January 2026, the road tax on motorhomes has doubled. This has caused a collapse in the second-hand market: listings surged 300% (from 500 to 1,500 per day), while sales fell 7% year-on-year. Owners of compact and older models are hit hardest, facing additional annual costs of €1,000–€1,200. Over 55,000 motorhomes (a quarter of the total fleet) have been temporarily deregistered to avoid the tax. At Euro Camper in Elst, no motorhomes have been sold since April, compared to the usual 3–4 per month.

Experts note that for buyers of €80,000 motorhomes, an extra €1,000 in tax may be negligible, but motorhomes are significantly cheaper in Belgium. The caravan sales boom is driven by increased camping popularity, especially among young families, and contrasts with declining sales in the rest of Europe, where buyers are switching to motorhomes.

Dutch caravan market: German brands dominate, Kip holds niche

The Netherlands has over 422,000 caravans, but new sales through July 2024 are led by German brands Hobby, Fendt, Knaus, Dethleffs, and Eriba-Hymer. The only Dutch brand maintaining a presence is Kip, founded in 1934. The Drenthe-based company focuses on lightweight, compact models (Shelter, Compact, Vision) suitable for small cars, hybrids, and EVs. Kip does not compete with mass-market brands but occupies a niche for buyers seeking an alternative.
