Since 1 January 2026, road tax on motorhomes in the Netherlands has doubled, adding 1000–1200 euros per year for owners. According to sources, the number of used motorhome listings jumped 300% (from 500 to 1500 per day), while sales fell 7% year-on-year. Over 55,000 motorhomes (a quarter of the fleet) have been temporarily deregistered to avoid the tax. At Euro Camper in Elst, not a single motorhome has been sold since April, compared to a normal 3–4 per month.
At the same time, the caravan market is booming. In March and April 2026, 2152 new caravans were registered (+18% vs 2025), and 2985 units in the first four months (+10%). New motorhome sales also rose 9% (1297 units in Jan–Apr). A record 637,000 caravans and motorhomes are now on Dutch roads. Popularity among young people is growing: the number of caravan owners aged 18–26 increased by 6%.
