Compare countries and cities by VanSky score and pick your next stop Compare regions by VanSky score and pick your destination
A comparison of 24 cities in Finland by VanSky score — how comfortable it is to travel in each today. We factor in temperature, wind, sun and conditions by the sea. Sort by any metric and pick your next stop. A comparison of 18 regions of Finland by VanSky score — where it's most comfortable to travel right now. We factor in temperature, wind, sun and conditions by the sea.
The country score (0–100) is computed from all of its cities, not a single point. Cities are grouped into regions, and a region's score is the median of its cities so dense clusters don't outweigh sparse ones. Final score = 0.65 × “best areas” (80th percentile of regions) + 0.35 × “typical conditions” (median of regions), so one warm city can't push the whole country to 100. Each city's score blends warmth (feels-like), sun, rain and wind, adjusted for night temperature and, on the coast, the sea. Data: Open-Meteo, refreshed several times a day.
The scale above shows what share of the country's cities falls into each comfort band. “Best spot” is the most comfortable region or city this week; “typical conditions” is the median score across regions.

Hannu and Soile Kivikoski, who have been caravanning across Finland for over 40 years, shared their experience. They won a seasonal pitch at the Sääksi camping site in Nurmijärvi, where the annual fee is under €900. The couple owns two caravans: a new Fendt over 8 meters long (bought for €50,000 in 2021) and a 20-year-old Kabe. They advise beginners to rent a caravan before buying.
A caravan caught fire on the premises of a building in Koivu, Tervola, early on July 17. The fire completely destroyed the caravan and damaged two other vehicles. No injuries were reported; the cause of the fire is unknown.
On Wednesday evening, a caravan caught fire while being towed on Highway 7 in Finland, igniting the towing van. Two people and three dogs escaped unharmed, but both vehicles were destroyed. Five fire units from Karhula and Hamina responded. The cause is unknown. This is the second vehicle fire on the same road in 1.5 weeks.
On the evening of January 20, a caravan caught fire on the E18 motorway at the border of Hamina and Virolahti, and the flames spread to the towing van. The fire started around 19:00, and no injuries were reported.
In Kuusamo, on Kemijärventie road, an unusual accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon. The driver parked the motorhome and entered the toilet, after which the vehicle rolled towards the roadside and overturned. Rescue services entered through a roof hatch and freed the driver. No injuries were reported; a cat inside the vehicle was unharmed.
Overnight stays in motorhomes and caravans outside designated campsites are dividing opinions. Nokian Uutiset investigates where wild camping occurs and what experiences have been gathered. The closure of the Viinikanniemi campsite after rezoning for detached housing is noted as background.
