A ban on wild camping, fires and barbecues has been introduced at nine locations on the North Yorkshire coast, including Scarborough and Whitby. The decision was made in response to complaints from local residents about litter, anti-social behaviour and environmental damage.

The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) gives the county council the power to evict offenders and issue fines. According to the council, offenders face a fixed penalty notice of up to £100 or a fine of up to £1,000 if the case goes to court.

Cleaning up and repairing damage from unauthorised camping between May and October 2024 cost more than £30,000.

Drivers could see motorhome and campervan rule in England scrapped

Scarborough Town Council has proposed reconsidering an overnight parking ban for motorhomes and campervans on the town's seafront. The council states the trial ban, implemented by North Yorkshire Council due to complaints, has displaced vehicles into residential areas, causing new issues with noise, waste, and parking. It argues for a controlled parking scheme on Marine Drive to address the problem.
