A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) will restrict wild camping, fires and barbecues at nine locations on the North Yorkshire coast, including Scarborough and Whitby. Approved by North Yorkshire Council on May 1, 2026, the order follows resident complaints about litter, anti-social behaviour and environmental damage. Offenders face a fixed penalty notice of up to £100 or a court fine of up to £1,000. The council reported that cleanup and repairs from unauthorised camping cost over £30,000 between May and October 2024.
