From July 1, 2026, the next stage of the European Mobility Package enters into force: the requirement to install a second-generation tachograph (Smart Tacho G2V2) extends to light commercial vehicles weighing 2.5 to 3.5 tons used in international transport or cabotage.
Exemptions apply to craftsmen (within a 100 km radius of their base) and own-account transport where driving is not the driver's main activity.
Fines for missing or defective devices reach 3,464 euros, for manipulation up to 7,000 euros, and for exceeding driving time up to 1,735 euros. According to other sources, fines range from 58 euros (Malta) to 30,000 euros (France), and vehicle impoundment is also possible.
