From January 1, 2026, the Netherlands has replaced the reduced tax rate (quarter) for motorhomes with a half rate, doubling monthly road tax payments. On average, a diesel motorhome owner pays €80–250 per month in tax, €25–100 for insurance, €50–175 for storage, plus a maintenance reserve (€75–200) and other costs. Total monthly expenses range from €265 to €865.
Rule Changes
A category B license is sufficient for motorhomes up to 3500 kg, and from July 1, 2025, up to 4250 kg for electric and alternative-fuel vehicles. The Dutch government is considering abolishing the administrative 'terugkeuren' (mass return) procedure, which allows reducing the permissible maximum mass of motorhomes and caravans on paper. Three industry organizations, including Bovag, warn this will affect tens of thousands of owners. If abolished, many would have to buy another vehicle or caravan, obtain heavier licenses, or use foreign vehicles. The organizations urge checking actual overloading rather than abolishing the administrative measure.
Road Incident
An incident was recorded in the Netherlands where a motorhome driver, allegedly in a hurry, created a dangerous situation, forcing other road users to give way. Such cases reinforce the stereotype of inattentive motorhome drivers, although many owners use them for short trips.
