Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge unveiled the production version of the VW ID. California Cruise electric camper based on the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz in Hanover. The market debut is expected in late summer 2026.
The top version features an electric motor with 250 kW (340 hp) and an 86 kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of about 430 km. With DC fast charging up to 200 kW, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in less than 30 minutes. The expected price starts at €85,000.
Earlier, the concept was shown at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (August 28 – September 6, 2026). Series production is expected before 2028; prices and sales start dates had not been disclosed. Alongside the concept, VW presented new camper modules, including an inflatable kitchen weighing less than 10 kg and a two-part bed measuring 2.00 by 1.34 meters. It was also reported that VW plans to launch an entire generation of fully electric campers by 2028, including a possible electric Grand California based on the E-Crafter. The project had previously been postponed due to low demand, but the company has now resumed development.
At Caravan Salon 2026, Volkswagen will show two world premieres: the factory camper ID. California Cruise based on the ID. Buzz and an inflatable kitchen for the new California Beach based on the Multivan. The kitchen and bed, developed together with German startup Stuff Bubble, inflate with an electric pump in three minutes and weigh less than ten kilograms. They use drop-stitch technology from the world of kite and paragliding, providing rigidity at a pressure of about 5.5 PSI. This is part of VW's strategy to create a fully electric camper lineup by 2028.
The show will also feature an updated California with an optional electric tailgate and improved climate system, a special California Ocean "Generation" series, and an aerodynamic package from ABT Sportsline. VWN notes it is the only manufacturer that fully develops and produces its camper family at its own plant in Hanover, where 250,000 California units have been built since 2004.
