Volkswagen has unveiled a concept for the electric camper ID. California based on the ID. Buzz. The ID. California Cruise concept will be shown at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (August 28 – September 6). A production version is expected by 2028.
The project was paused in 2023 due to weight issues affecting range and payload. Technical specifications, including range, have not yet been disclosed. The company will also present a line of inflatable furniture to reduce weight and plans to launch a family of electric campers.
According to Italian sources, the project was frozen in 2024 due to low demand, but the company now notes growing interest in electric vehicles in Europe. Updates to the ID. Buzz architecture are also expected at the show, including increased range and reduced charging time.
According to Austrian sources, the show featured the first fully electric camper ID. California Cruise based on the ID. Buzz Pro, with sleeping space for two people. First deliveries are expected in early 2027; prices have not yet been announced.
