Trailer test: aerodynamics beats weight for electric cars

Comparative tests at the Boxberg proving ground have shown that when towing a caravan, aerodynamics of the trailer is more important than its weight for electric vehicles. The test involved a Tesla Model Y and a Škoda Karoq with a diesel engine.

The larger Fendt Bianco 495 SG trailer proved more efficient than the smaller Next 380 due to better aerodynamics. At a speed of 100 km/h, the Tesla's consumption with the smaller trailer was 3.3 kWh/100 km higher.

The economic viability of choosing between diesel and electric depends on current fuel and electricity prices.

Large Caravan, Greater Range in Consumption Test: Why Aerodynamics Beat Weight

Tests revealed that a larger and heavier Fendt Bianco caravan consumes less energy than a compact and light Next 380 when towed by the same vehicle. Aerodynamics proved to be the key factor: the caravan's shape impacts fuel consumption and range more than its mass, especially at speeds around 100 km/h. The tests were conducted at the Bosch proving ground in Boxberg using a Tesla Model Y electric car and a diesel Skoda Karoq.
