Before the peak return from summer holidays in late August and early September, motorhome owners are advised to inspect brakes, tires and gas systems to prevent costly breakdowns. According to AECA-ITV, the first inspection is due four years after registration, then every two years until ten years, and annually thereafter; converted vans require annual checks for the first ten years and then every six months. Inspections cover brakes, suspension, lighting, engine, emissions, and specific items like skylights, awnings and solar panels. Overloading increases braking distance and reduces stability, while a gas leak can be a serious hazard. A roadside breakdown can cost over 500 euros, whereas preventive checks are far cheaper.
