Germany's first campsite opened on May 5, 1931, in Cologne-Rodenkirchen. Founder Jakob Berger set up a tent area next to his boathouse. The campsite is now run by the fourth generation of the family. In 2025, German campsites recorded 44.7 million overnight stays — a record, 25% more than in 2019.
