Winter camping rarely fails because of the heater, but because of cold corners, moisture and frozen water. A caravan is rated for winter use under DIN EN 1645-1: level II allows use down to 0 °C, while level III withstands temperatures down to -15 °C. In the level III test the living area is cooled to -15 °C for 10 hours and then heated to 20 °C, with a maximum temperature difference of 7 °C across six measuring points. The water system is checked after heating, and an 11 kg gas cylinder provides 2 to 5 days of heating depending on temperature. To prevent freezing, the fresh water tank should sit in a heated area, and waste water can be drained through an open valve into a bucket.
