From July 2026, the EU's General Safety Regulation II (GSR II) comes into force, requiring all new camper vans, including motorhomes, to be equipped with a range of driver assistance systems. Depending on vehicle weight and class, mandatory systems include intelligent speed assistance, driver fatigue monitoring, alcohol interlock preparation, reversing camera, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and tyre pressure monitoring.
According to experts, this will increase the price of a new camper van by 1,000–3,000 euros. For models up to 3.5 tonnes, eight assistance systems become mandatory, including automatic braking, lane keeping, and driver fatigue monitoring. Heavier vehicles additionally require blind spot and pedestrian warning systems when turning.
The rules do not apply to already produced models with valid type approval. However, if a converted van is registered as a motorhome after July 7, it is considered a new vehicle and must also meet the new standards.
