ANWB and BOVAG advise removing gas cylinders from a motorhome before long-term winter storage, even if the cylinder appears empty. The cylinder should be stored upright in a cool, well-ventilated place above ground level; a basement or other low enclosed space is unsuitable because propane and butane are heavier than air and can accumulate if a leak occurs. Some storage facilities offer a separate area for gas cylinders, so conditions should be checked in advance. In spring, hoses, connections and the pressure regulator should be inspected before using the gas system.
